Yeah, in general, I didn't think the effects were that bad, but Ganon looked (and sounded) horrible.

I thought Ganon sounded okay.

I know I had a head start, since I didn't know about this until it appeared here, and I don't want to be mean, but based upon the lousy look of the live-action (as opposed to the effects) sequences I don't see how this could be taken quite as serious as it seems to have been.  Even some of the worst movies I've ever seen have better actors, makeup, and cinematography than that thing.

It was supposedly a video game movie. That automatically means it's not going to be very good. :P

Quote from: Xathan, Last of the Fallen, circa 1999Oh, I dunno. A [Lord of the Rings] move would likely suck, much as I would love to see it - mainly because I have yet to see a [fantasy] movie that didn't suck. I'd still shell out the $8 to see it, but I have a feeling there would be a bunch of very angry fans after opening day.

Touché?

But...I have seen fantasy movies I like, and I had prior to LOTR...

had[/i] to have been a concession to the game's fans, detracted from the exploration of the relationships and 47's moral crisis.  I for one thought the movie's plot and characters were simplified for the mass market; the game surpasses is immensely.

Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid) spins better tales than any action film I've ever seen.  Goichi Suda (No More Heroes) and Yasumi Matsuno (Vagrant Stories) are fantastic as well.  Darnit, the game industry is filled with awesome creative talent.  Maybe games just aren't meant to be adapted (as some folks argue) but I tend to disagree.  I think the people who oversee the transition simply underestimate and misconstrue the merits of the medium.

But back to Zelda...

Well, I don't think live-action is a good idea.  I've always thought the game's resonance was in its mythology, a kind of far-away sense that would be best served by animation.  Hylians aren't people with pointy ears, they're Hylians, with a pixyish temperament and a fairytale air.    Live-action would ground it too much in our reality.  (I figure folks are imagining a movie based - at least artistically - on the Ocarina of Time or the twilight Princess.  While it is the logical choice, remember that most of the series is more childlike or caricatured in its presentation, and I think that touch of innocence is essential)

If I could dictate the creation of a Zelda movie, they'd speak in a made up language with sub-titles (optional on the DVD) and the plot would be comprehensible expressly through the visuals.  You'd feel good watching it, and you'd bring the children.  It'd be Kid Link, because he looks that much ballsier when he doesn't even fill his tunic, and Ganon would be an oversised, overaggrandised megalomaniac.

I hope to God they never make a Zelda movie, because it'd be nothing like that.

I really want to know what the heck the priceless Triforce was doing, just chilling in the marketplace where any schmuck could walk up and touch it.

For that matter, what was it doing in Hyrule at all?  But then, since we can all agree its creators were taking the piss, that's all pretty much moot.
