Or the letter "e", for that matter.

Imagine a world where everyone had heat-vision.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

SDragon

combine the two imaginings in that, wouldnt everybody in the world have "hat-vision"?

I'm so happy.  I got quoted!
If no one minds, I'll do one of those "author explains their inpiration for the great work", even if it does seem self-agrandizing.

The whole intent of the signature was to showcase my view that Wizards kept making settings and setting material that seems blatantly uncreative (and, just in case, I came on the RPG scene during 3.5).  The old "I could do better than that" type of feeling.  Ever since I've had ideas out all my orifices.  This signature just showcases a few of them to try and get people to at least think a bit outside their frighteningly tiny box:
"Imagine a world where alignment is completely opposite." = I can't quite remember what this means.  I've never been a fan of the D&D alignment system because it attempts to define good and evil.  One of the things that has struck me about good is that it has to follow rules, while evil is much more free.  This may be when I had the idea that "evil" represented being free from the system, and "good" meant being enslaved to it.
"Imagine a world where the gods walk among the people." = This one is basically self-explanatory: why have distant gods?  The D&D mentality that gods are real and are omni-lots 'o things and intervene in everything in mortal lives yet don't live on the Material plane just breaks the fun.  If gods are distant then there should be a question as to whether or not they're real (Eberron).  For gods walking among the people I concieve of a world where the gods aren't all-powerful but are somehow different from mortals and have some small aspect of the world they have to watch over, and actually have to earn worship instead of commanding it.
"Imagine a world where humans are only a legend." = I have to admit up front that I have it in for our species.  In real life.  It furthermore irks me that humans are given as the "most adpatable race", all literary examples be damned.  So I'm always looking for a way to do away with them.  Making them a legend seems like fun because then you have to enter a world where you would be one of those mythical creatures everyone talks about, as if you were a fairy in this world.
"Imagine a world ruled by good devils." = Again, I try to break alignment.  Would devils, who are put out as very lawful and organized, really be that bad as rulers if they were good?  Besides, they look cool.
"Imagine a world made completely of plants." = The visual image is stunning: you're standing on a giant tree branch which connects itself to many more branches and to trunks of other trees, the world is a giant forest around you, if you look over the edge of a tree branch the trunks of the trees extend down as far as you can see and anyone has ever gone.  All of a sudden there isn't ground between you and a third dimension of adventure.
"Imagine a world made completely of city." = This is my personal favorite.  I came up with this before I'd ever heard of Ravinica, and they're nothing alike.  My city-planet is actually more like that dungeon planet someone came up with, where everything, mountains, canyons, plains, is just part of one massive building that extends in all the way through the planet.  And it's not just blocky dungeon: every mile was designed architecturally by some long-dead race, and now it's inhabited by races that came from who-knows-where.  No more needing to justify dungeons to crawl, and they don't have to be underground any more.
"Imagine a world where the very surface had been split between law and chaos." = I've always thought that Law and Chaos were actually easier to justify than Good and Evil, and this world makes use of associations with each such as ice and fire.  This idea mostly came out of trying to think how I could make greater use of Sandstorm and Frostburn, but I think that it would make for a great alignment conflict campaign.
"Imagine a world formed out of dreams." = I just put this one in for fun.  But if you use it you can justify any odd terrain or whatnot that you want.

Here are some more I've come up with since then:
Imagine a world protected by good demons.
Imagine a world that exists inside the remains of a god's house.
Imagine a plane made up of the inside of buildings.
Imagine a world where the mortals overthrew the gods and decided to worship the material world.
Imagine a world where magical coal has inducted in a steam age without pollution.
Imagine a world where nature transformed the humanoids into anthropomrophic animals.
Imagine a city-sized plane that is the only conncection to any other, and that contains all the elemental planes within it.
Imagine a world where Tiamat is Good and mother to all.
Imagine a world where all the races are descended from Magical Beasts.
I'm a muck-levelist, I like to see things from the bottom.

"No matter where you go, you will find stupid people."

beejazz

Imagine a world where the gods were imprisoned in the spheres of the heavens [planets].
Imagine a world where alignment encompassed philosophical affiliations or psychological assessment (id vs. ego).
Imagine a world where heaven is a physical place... a citadel watching humanity.
Imagine a world that has 86 days to live.
Imagine a world where radioctive frogs worship enormous fungus creatures.
Imagine a world where every creature with 30+ hit dice wasn't necessarily a god.
Imagine a world where dead and sleeping gods are used as a source of clean electricity.
