Playing In/Playtesting Your World

Ninja D!

First of all, please forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong section.  I was unsure of where this would fit the best as it is not related to any specific aspect of my/a campaign world but it is still related to the creation of them.

A lot of people that GM (yeah, I say GM, not DM) have created their own setting(s).  I have seen people here post more than one.  I also know of a lot people that want to play but almost never actually do.  Because of this, I was wondering, do you actually run your world?  Either just for playtesting certain aspects or as the setting for an entire campaign?

I haven't yet, myself, but I hope to this fall.

Numinous

I hope to start a PbP game at the CBg in my Campaign Setting this fall, and a game IRL in a Core setting which I'm making for my group of all-new players.
Previously: Natural 20, Critical Threat, Rose of Montague
- Currently working on: The Smoking Hills - A bottom-up, seat-of-my-pants, fairy tale adventure!

Ninja D!

Once I have the basics down for my world, I would love to do have PBP game somewhere to see how it runs and make any revisions I need to before I get a serious campaign going (which may or may not be IRL.)

Wix of Bel-Air

Once I designate a theme to my world... then yeah, I will.
Eats brains here! Ugh!
That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.
"To obtain a deep, restful, and fulfilling sleep, you must first submerge yourself in your cyclopean city of hideous non-Euclidean geometries beneath the sea, and then let your body die. But don't worry! As long as you continue to emanate enough evil thought-energy to influence and control your many worshippers throughout the untold eons, they will resurrect you when the time comes. I guarantee it!"
Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive."

(as Stegosaurus) "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'."

(as T-Rex) "I think we should call it...your grave!"

(Stegosaurus) "Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

(T-Rex) "Ha ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh...now die!"

No! penury, inertness and grimace,
In some strange sort, were the land's portion. "See
Or shut your eyes," said Nature peevishly,
"It nothing skills: I cannot help my case:
'Tis the Last Judgment's fire must cure this place,
Calcine its clods and set my prisoners free."

SDragon

i think he means what gives his setting something that wont fit in other settings.

on topic, however, i havent played or GMed xiluh yet. my plans are to get the first playtest done through the 'adopt-a-setting' thing, then adjust that campaign into the world, and work from there until im ready to run a PbP campaign (or until i have enough players for a RL campaign).

I don't really see how that could be called a "theme" but I do understand what you mean.

Also, I guess you need to get some sleep or fix your space bar.

Orden's Mysteries is my only setting. I have never DMed in another setting, and don't plan to.

"Then shall the last battle be gathered on the fields of Valinor. In that day Tulkas shall strive with Melko, and on his right shall stand Fionwe and on his left Turin Turambar, son of Hurin, Conqueror of Fate; and it shall be the black sword of Turin that deals unto Melko his death and final end; and so shall the Children of Hurin and all men be avenged." - J.R.R. Yair

Black Jack, having played in many settings one of the others in my group (alternate DM, we switch places every so often) decided to begin building our own world.

We ran one small and one major campaign in it before we realized it needed some work.  It is currently on blocks undergoing an overhaul.  But to answer your question, I think the only way to work out the "kinks" in your world is to play in it.

VoidAdept

I just ran my first session in my new world -- my son's first tabletop RPG session, and my wife's first 3.5 ed game. A lot of firsts last night, I guess.

Slaughtering a handful of goblins had never been so much fun.

VoidAdept

Very well, thanks. It's just the two of them playing right now, but I think they're hooked. I might try my hand at some fiction as the campaign develops more.
