Mmm... alot of this relies on stuf we haven't decided. I mean, the mundane stuff.
I actually like the idea of magic not relying on some finite resource (times per day, mana, recharge) and buying spells individually, upgrading them individually, etc.
I'm not quite as fond of the idea that there should be a "useless prerequisite"... No one wants to buy something that doesn't do anything.
Note that without a finite pool of resources to draw from, you might want to curtail the effectiveness of spells, as opposed to DnD.

Hmm...  I'm not sure I like how much you're still using per day limits, and being able to cast every round seems a bit off to me as well.  I like the idea of being able to modify your own spells, but the system overall I would prefer we didn't use.

It seems to me that, if you can use literally unlimited spells, you'd have to be very careful with the power of the magic. I mean, things like invisibility can be tough to beat, and if the caster can just freely make everyone in the party invisible on a whim, well...you get the picture.

I'd think you'd need to make almost all the spells roll to hit, and/or roll for spell failure when cast. Damage and spell durations would have to be scaled down to make sure that magic isn't more powerful than melee abilities.

It does seem a little odd to me that spells are unlimited, but incantations and charms are X/day. What would be the flavor or background for deciding which magics are spells, incantations, charms, and rituals?

Hmmm... Well, I like okay the spells... but incantations known and per day? Am I reading that right?

Hmmm... multisystems for characters to cast spells then?

Seems like, as far as further development goes, you'd mostly have to start compiling lists of spells (incantations, rituals, charms), their costs, and upgrades.

We might need to wait and see how combat and skill mechanics go before working on saving throws or resistance, or other mechanics like that.

Yeah, let's revamp that sample caster a little bit, maybe?
Stats of one pretty much don't happen. (start at two, distribute three). Just a heads-up. We've got the *beginnings* of a combt/skills system up on the number crunching thread.

I realized while giving this project a moderate bit of skull sweat how tremendously whacked D&D magic is.  I have not like Vancian magic, but as I tried to work through crafting a magic system, I found myself returning to and refining some game basics as well.

Magic needs to be balanced against melee, that is a given, in my opinion, but what about tech?
So, over and over I went back to the drawing board (really just a pad of paper I keep with me, even at work), getting a system that diverges from the CBG system.

Hell, I'm looking to adapt this to a mech game, so...
