Questions to ask oneself

As I was reading my nots for my setting over and over and over and also reading peoples comments and questions, I realized I pretty much had to restart from scratch. Kinda. As there were alot of things left unspecified and unclear.

So I sat down, asked myself a few questions and then helped myself with, say, the Fortnight kin-of thread to increase the number of question and thus, giving a more detailed end result.

Here is what I did for the Lux Apex, the "starting" place and jewel of modern civilization of my Campaign Setting.

[ic=Questions]
Lux Apex

About ancient civilization
How did the people live their everyday lives? Were they nomad or sedentary? Was there any kind of strict hierarchy or leading characters?

About the Warring States
Who were the leading characters, what were their accomplishments and what did they have that others didn't?

About the Unified State
Who are the leading characters, what are their accomplishments and what do they have that others don't? Who protects the sovereignty of the state?

Weather
How's the weather in the region? Is the region prey to natural catastrophies?

Bestiary
What kind of animals, dinosaurs, insects and other strange beasts roam the land, before and during the Unified State? Where do they fit in the food chain?

Dogmata
Are there any strict religious groups? What are their belief and goal? How are they perceived by others that do not share their belief? Who are the instigators of such beliefs and for what purpose have they created the dogma?

Organizations
Are there any organizations other than dogmata, trading companies and ruling factions? Who are they? What are their goals? Do they act openly or secretly? How do people that are not part of these groups perceive them?

-   Alien defense organization
-   Healing/Medical arts
-   Art & Culture organization
-   Dissident factions (Why are they opposing?)
-       More to come...

Calendar, Time and Events
Is there a calendar system that keeps track of time (hours, days, months, years)? Are there any holidays or festivals and why? Who keeps track of time and events?

Cosmology
Are there any particular beliefs about the sky, stars, comets, e.t.c? Are there any organizations related to cosmic science and who are they and what are their goal?

Trade and Currency
What currency do the people of the peninsula use? Who oversees the making and the usage of the currency? Are there any taxes and where does tax-money go? What goods do they trade? With whom do they trade? Are there any specific trade organizations? Are there any set trading routes? What are the legal trade goods and the illegal ones?

Illicit Substances and Acitivities
Are there any drugs? What are they and how are they acquired? Is there any alcohol? What kind and how is it acquired? Are there any activities considered illegal? What are they and how are they done? Who controls those practices?

Law and Punishments
Are there any strict laws? What are they? Who oversees the respect of the law? What is the punishment for one who has done an illegal deed?

Routes and Travel
Are there any routes? How does one travel?[/ic]

I've done it for a single region, but you can definitely do it for a single city, a single organization or a whole country!

I haven't posted this thinking I had everything covered. I'd definitely like to have the people who think I could add in more important questions post that here.

Also, for those who haven't read my setting, the three first parts (ancient civ, Warring States and Unified State) are really realted to my own campaign and are definitely subject to change, depending on the campaign.

Hope that proves to be a productive topic.

I just noticed I haven't put a "magic" section which is so dear to most campaign settings out there. Even though I put the Cosmology section, these might be two entirely different things.

Though we must admit the subject is vague, as it can be both regional and universal, it still needs looking into.

In my case I'd do it like this;

[ic=Magic]Does magic exist? What can it do? Who can use it? Does anyone oversees/control its use? Are there any particularities at magic such as; addiction, self-destruction, links to science, e.t.c?[/ic]

This is a pretty good list of prompts.

You do whatever you want to do. If you have comments about the questions I asked then go ahead, it'll surely help. If you think more questions should be asked, go ahead and tell us what those questions are as it helps detail the world in which the campaign setting is built.

On my part, I DID add more questions, I am also answering them so I will post what I got later and also post them on my setting's thread.

P.S: Thanks Light, I'm personally sure there are lots of things missing, but a step ahead to helping the community nonetheless.

P.S.S: This thread is more of a "Hey, let's help those who got the same hobby!" than a "That's for me, but I'm just showing." kinda thread. Bleh, I hope that was clear... I have some troubles making myself clear at times.
