Captain Obvious

You know what game everyone should play?

Toon, that's what!
It is one of the greatest roleplaying games ever (especially since the rules are so lax that almost the whole game is based on roleplaying and imagination).
Also it's hilarious. My rabbit character once got hit by sheep shears, and dumped in a processor where he was turned into shape-shifting peanut butter. He then spent the rest of the game as a blob of anthropomorphic peanut butter. Ahh, good times.

England.
Just a conspiracy of cartographers, then?

GURPS. Not just because it allows you to easily create almost any character concept conceivable, including some very hard to do with d20.

No, because it inspires you to create characters you never even knew you wanted to create until you read the rules.

Thank you Phoenix for rambling about TRoS! I had looked at it, loved it and then forgotten the name. >_<

I'm contemplating buying the tome, though I'd like to see what you think are downsides to the system.

where I get that game?

It's an old-ish steve Jackson Game. It's likely hard to get currently, although maybe you can order it from them. Or maybe even download it from somewhere. My copies of the books are like 12 or 13 years old and are totally falling apart.

The only book you actually need is Toon (it's the red one). The others are okay but not needed. You could probaly get it online somewhere for like 15-20 bucks.

GURPS, Iron Heroes and Nobilis.  The latter because no other game allows you to literally sieze the economy by the lovesack and crush the friggin' life out of it.

And if you've got the right players for it, freeform roleplaying is hella fun.

Túrin

None. I can find players to play DnD with me, so I'm satisfied and need no other system.

"Then shall the last battle be gathered on the fields of Valinor. In that day Tulkas shall strive with Melko, and on his right shall stand Fionwe and on his left Turin Turambar, son of Hurin, Conqueror of Fate; and it shall be the black sword of Turin that deals unto Melko his death and final end; and so shall the Children of Hurin and all men be avenged." - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Shaping of Middle-Earth

I like D&D, all in all, but sometimes I want a game system that allows for more flexibility. Or rather, for flexibility that doesn't involve lots and lots of cludgy new rules. Some character concepts can't be easily done with D&D.

HyveMynd

i really liked the fuzion system since it was so maleable. i found it when i picked up a copy of the bubblegum crisis rpg. too bad that the company kinda stopped making stuff for it.

the other rpg system that i really REALLY liked (and maybe that's just because it was the only system that i ran a successful campaign in) was starwars. not the new wotc d20 version, but the old one created by westend games. it was awesome. i am a big big BIG fan of skill based systems over class and lever systems (another reason why i liked fusion) and the mecahics were nice and streamlined. stats and skills were rated in #d6's. when you attempted something, you rolled your dice, totalled them, and compared it to a target number. kinda like the newer d20 system, but better in my opinion.

i totally cried when i saw that wotc had turned starwars into a class and level system. how do you have a "smuggler", "ambassador", or "princess" class? it just makes no sense.

SA

Oh yeah, and Amber (based on Nine Princes of Amber).  A very simple rules system with a fun bidding system for attributes, plus it's extraordinarily flexible and could cater to many more settings than it is explicitly designed for.

Ishmayl-Retired

A tried out a system called "Agone," and it had a lot of promise, but quite frankly, it was just too complicated.  3-to-4 different mathematical equations were required for every check you ever did, and they came up with new names for everything which was just a bit heacachesome.

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

Kinda like F.A.T.A.L...

My god, that game was a pain!
