Do Not Want combat to ever become a trivial, boring or happy affair. (Which is why I'm getting TRoS (eventually))

Whatever. As long as...

Actually, add to my last one...

DO NOT want crappy, cruddy, predetermined alignment. Full stop.

ESPECIALLY Lawful Good. Or Chaotic Good. Now, Chaotic Neutral...

Also, I DO NOT WANT the only 'good' examples of chaos to be childlike angels or robin-hood-wannabes.

DeeL

That reminds me - Do Not Want alignments to become clubs.  You know what I mean.  You telling me the king is going to fire the chamberlain because the king is chaotic good and the chamberlain is lawful evil?  What if they've been lifelong friends and the chamberlain, despite his cruel streak, is a loyal subject?  I like the alignment system just fine, because if it is played with virissimilitude it is played as a fundamentally private matter.  A Paladin can use it for very specific purposes, but Detect Evil should never be completely synonymous with Detect Enemy.  A knight in service to the king, even a lawful good knight, should be able to work productively with the chamberlain without a qualm (unless the chamberlain does something duplicitous.)

Alignments may have very real supernatural effects, but the personal ones should be strictly OOC.  Eberron is particularly egregious in this matter - a certain queen in that setting is Neutral Good in alignment, not because she is a good person, but because it was important to the setting that she belong to the 'good' club.  In point of fact, she is treacherous and dangerously ambitious.  She may very well be compassionate to her subjects, and fund orphanages or whatever - that stuff doesn't make her good if she's ready to plunge the land into war, as it seems, just because she doesn't like the current arrangement.

Then there's Incarnum.  I would say 'don't get me started', but this is a rant so away we go!

Well, let's see.  The Azurin are the children of humans who have, for whatever reason, been filled with a little more 'soul' than other humans.  This means they are a little stronger in the use of incarnum than other humans.  It also means they can only be LG, CG, LE, or CE.  Because, y'know, those are the strongest alignments and the azurin is really strong in alignment.  Because he's, like, got a little more soul-stuff than most folks.

What?  What?!?  What is that?  Why couldn't that extra soul energy by Neutral?  What about Neutral Good?  What if a an azurin who had previously been Lawful suddenly starts feeling unually capricious and whimsical?  Does he leapfrog over the 'neutral' alignment and start acting all chaotic all of a sudden?  Why are the various 'neutral' clubs closed to such individuals?   You would think that the 'neutral' clubs would want people strong in incarnum, just to round things out.  But nooooo...

"More so than most other mortal races, azurins strive to embody their alignments."  That's the explanation given.  Do Not Want.

Then there's the Incarnate, the primary core incarnum class.  Here's another quote - "As an incarnate, you must choose one alignment component:  good, evil, law, or chaos.  This alignment component defines you and serves as your guiding principle.  For incarnates, though, this is more than just belief, because incarnates channel souls that contain the very essence of this alignment component."  -snip-  "Incarnates of different alignments have different methods of fighting and different strengths in combat - "  so basically, an incarnates powers vary depending on which of the four alignments they are.  NG, LN, CN, NE.  Those are the four alignments, and each one has certain powers not permitted to the others.  Because we all know how protective good people are, and how focussed chaotic people are on speed and quickness.  Right.  What about a good person who believes that his principle duty in combat is to end it as quickly as possible, implying that he needs to put an adversary down fast?  Can't do that - doing damage is Evil in this scheme.  And you have to be strictly Lawful to be able to hit more accurately.  Each club has it's own little school, apparently.

The second of the 3 core incarnum using classes is the Soulborn.  Here's the alignment notes on soulborn - "Soulborns are polarized in their alignments, hewing to strong convictions of morality and ethics.  As such, they can only be lawful good, chaotic good, lawful evil, or chaotic evil."  Nary a word on a soulborn whose convictions lead him to be lawful irrespective of good or evil, or evil without regards to law or chaos, or even a soulborn who aspires to the natural purity of a true neutrality.  Perhaps needless to say, these four soulborn clubs also each have their own little mystical ups and downs, lending themselves to certain tactics that may or may not be to the liking of a player.

Bottom line - Do Not Want alignment to be the defining feature of any character, not even Paladins.  Let the character be it's own character, and let alignment be the result.

Oh man... are you ever in the wrong thread.  Feel free to start a 'bucket o' daisies' thread, if you like.

And Brainface - nice approach.  And wasn't that back in the days when each alignment had its own language?
