I apologize if you have covered this already. These are some of the things I do because I only have the core books and can't afford very many of life's little luxuries. And I would love to know how the rest of you cut corners to.

While Im' supposed to be working I go into Barnes and Noble and use it as my own personal gaming library.
When I cant to that I go to forums and to gain insight and ask questions to noble individuals such as yourself.
For a gaming mat I use a chalkboard I trashpicked and for miniatures I have a dollarstore bag of toy soilders and another of animals. I made my dm screen out of a cardboard box, printed out a bunch of stuff I always seem to forget and taped it to the inside with a couple of hand drawn charts.
Finally, graph paper and pencils are pretty cheap, D.I.Y.

Oh, and eggs and parmesan cheese are pretty bangin' in ramen noodles.

I stopped buying WotC supplements a while back.   Anything worthwhile in them can be found on the net.

Chalkboard?  Great find for a multitude of uses.

I have always made my own DM screens, the commercial ones are always overpriced schlock, and never have the stuff I tend to need referenced the most.

QuoteOh, and eggs and parmesan cheese are pretty bangin' in ramen noodles.

Cabbage.  Cheap and good for you.

limetom

I like shio or shoyu ramen with red naruto and egg.  I'll eat miso ramen as well, but not as often.  I've never had tonkotsu ramen.  Living in Hawaii allows me to get the real stuff, thanks to an (expensive) ramen shop at Ala Moana mall.

However, being a college student means I'm stuck with Top Ramen.  The chicken variety is analogous to shio ramen.  The "Oriental" variety is similar to, but not close to shoyu ramen (essentially, shoyu ramen is shio ramen with soy sauce added to the broth).  I think there is a miso variety of Top Ramen, but I can't remember.  The beef variety is a thin version of tonkotsuramen.

(No... not Naruto the anime character... his namesake, this.)

SDragon

no goku?

i mean, if we're going o be cheap, here.....

by the way, if i have to use minis, then i might as well use my old heroclix. at least the thugs get to be used for something....

by the way, heroclix work wonders if youre using a marvel RPG. only problem is when youre not able to play ghost rider because your DM doesn't have that figure, but the guy next to you gets 50 different outfits, because he chose to play wolverine....

If we're talking cheap food here then I vote for the humble tinned chopped tomato.  You can use chopped tomatos in chilli con carne, a variety of curries and, of course, pasta sauce.  Forget sat-nav and missions to the moon, the tinned chopped tomato is the apex of modern civilization.  Time to move over and give the ants a chance.

I prefer the "Heroes Unlimited" Rifts supplement, I was thinking of spray painting my stupid toy soilders gold, (I got a half a can of that lyin' around somewhere) that army green is just so dull! The cow figure is also not a very convincing dragon.  :(
Rice and beans are my other big source of sustenance. :2cents:

When I was a kid, I once bought a little pack of plastic dinosaurs - the Jurasic equivalent of little plastic soldiers - and there was one figure in the pack that wasn't actually a dinosaur: it was a rust monster! Not just a figure that looked like a rust monster, but an actual, exactly-as-it-appeared-in-the-Monster-Manual rust monster. This in a package of figs that weren't made for D&D, or even for gaming. It was the coolest surprise a little gamer kid could find in a cheap bag of toys.

Of course, that's not my favorite cheap fig. A friend of mine once made a gellatinous cube out of Jello. Accurate, tasty, and an immediate favorite. And incidentally, that particular cheap fig also qualifies as cheap food, thus tying into this discussion on two different levels.

According to the classic story, Gygax based the rust monster on a dinosaur toy he had found.  Maybe that was it.
