New poetry that is not about a girl

That's right, it's not about a girl.  I'm done writing poetry about girls for a while.  This is my most recent poetic work, which, while not about a girl, is not too far from the subject of girls.  It is entitled "Voluptuary" and as far as technique goes, it's all about alliteration.

Voluptuary

The image of perfection;
A masculine enigmity:
Falsehood's favored son
Cloaked in counterfeit countenance,

But perfection proves imperfect.
That fraudulent face
Offers no love, offers naught--
Seeking to sate its sybaritic self.

Curbed carnal cravings crescendo
Into a pyre of passion.
The prurient, sensuous seduction
An avaricious aphrodisiac.

Evil erotic escapades
Driving damsels downward in desire;
Depraved debauchery--
A corporal contagion.

Fickle fault of flesh:
Pregnant of promise
Yet virginal of verity.
A misogynist in a maudlin mask.

Not about a girl... more about... some kind of lecher.

Very nicely written.

Ballad of the Sun and Moon

I gazed into the midnight sky
To view my Lady Moon-shine;
"Sweet silver sorceress of mine,
Why dost thou hang thy head to cry?"

"The Sun has gone away," she said.
"I never more will see my love.
He once held station high above,
But now the world is cold and dead."

Her tears a flood of grief profound--
Tender aching at his absence
Feels ever his bright influece:
Sad symphony bereft of sound.

"Sweet Selene, not so sad a tune:
See sombre breaking of your heart--
No ship a sea of tears may chart.
My mistress be a maudlin moon.

"While weep we may when hope deserts
Despair do not so dextrous find
As night doth follow day behind,
Whose coming loving strength asserts.

"For day doth dawn again, my dove"
As I reveal my morning rays,
"No dark begot of yesterdays
Can ever keep away my love."

Seraph

It's funny how quickly a bad day can turn good.  I was not having a good Valentine's Day, until I saw how something so simple as a smile can brighten up your day.

Observation of a Smile

February:
Libra: â,¬Å"Itâ,¬,,¢s natural
To want what you canâ,¬,,¢t have.â,¬Â
How strange:
Fortune flips a funny coin;
For here I lie
Trapped between two loves
Where neither can be mine.

I loved a love whose lovely
Name was Love.
I fell a fall whose falling
Was my hell.
My sight a light of pure delight
Did sightâ,¬'
But wait!  Cruel fate lures with empty bait
She has a mate.

A most lamentable state
To toss and fret;
Too late to turn or tarry
Where I am,
Too early to move forward.
And such is my predicament:
The only pathway forward
Leads to visible despair.

And what sorry luck
On day of lovers
To be without a love.
The one denied,
The other claimed,
No love be mine today.
No Valentine.
Even friendly smile
Meets a cold rebuke.

What for?  A mirror
With which to show reflections
Of events.  My simpering smile
Plays back in my memory
Projected on my face,
Observed unknown to me
By carefree counterpart,
And thus a smile given
Begets a smile received.
The vibrant orange hue
Springs forward to my eyes
I see with sudden wisdom
The inherent happy error.
Two searching eyes did find
Two eyes lost in themselves
And wrested them from dreary halls
Of melancholy detachment.

That smile was never meant for her.
And yet she received it.
To be in blissful ignorance and omniscience
Her accepting made it that it had not been,
For now I would not take that smile from her
To give to any more intentioned love.
That momentary love
Was worth the trials of the rest.
The dayâ,¬,,¢s alonement made atonement.
That smile was not meant for her.
But hers was meant for me.

Very nice. I'm not much of a poem-analyzer so sorry on that point. These somehow remind me of all the vocab I have to study for the SAT. I'm not doing to well apparently. Keep it up!

Breaking Wall

A tyrannous wall, mistress of authority
Watches with imperious manner
The slow and ineffectual flailing
Of my desperate mind.
Too stretched I am;
Too much divided against myself
To focus any power to effect
So little as a dent
In the armor of that bastion of denial.
Words meander slowly
In arcing circles about the face of the wall
Making no progress to oâ,¬,,¢erreach its stones.
Those stones are minds impediments
And methinks that I recall some otherâ,¬,,¢s words;
â,¬Å"Something there is that doesnâ,¬,,¢t love a wall.â,¬Â
Indeed the Iceman said so and agree
Do I, for I wish I could be the figure of his elves.
For fences make good neighbors at a prison
Or else to keep lust-wandâ,¬,,¢ring cows in check,
But elsewhere serve no purpose but to freeze.
One thing be sure: Youâ,¬,,¢d never see me walk along the wall
To fill the two-wide gaps along the way.
A wall too monumental in its scorn
Does not please me or invoke in me
Any desire to see it make amends
In any sense applying to itself;
But rather do for us by undoing itselfâ,¬'
That is the sole amendment I would bear.
A wall of even two feet high
Has fearsome fiendish force to block our sight
A full league higher, blinding us to all else close around
That doth not lie within our narrow sty.
And so we go on, always sure secure,
Closed in by shallow walls of deepest height
Whose incorporeal form we trust a solemn tenure
Till safetyâ,¬,,¢s self dissolves to blackest night.

Numinous

I like this last one.  I'm not much for creative criticism, but it reminds me of the classical poetry which I usually read, of the Romantic period.  Dude, keep it up.

well, I don't know much about the Romantic period . . .
This last one started with an urge to write coupled with a mental block.

Seraph

This poem is taken directly from Avayevnon mythology.  An earlier attempt at it was the inspiration for "Ballad of the Sun and Moon."

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

Her love more pure than any mortal kind
Did shine forth with a strong unflinching light
Reflecting her her true and noble self
Undaunted by any doubting voice.

True, Lugraâ,¬,,¢s love was matchless
Save but by her husband Helidh Sun, the Bright.
For Helidh gave to all the earth his care
And blessings of days unchecked by want of sight.

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

Helidh and Lugra fostered all the world
Caressing all with warmth and gentleness
But all that is good does not last
And love and light would prove not infinite.

The coarse-skinned Mehan-folk
With spears and sticks did boast about their skills.
Unwanted demonstrations of their foolishness
Did brand them badly as they sought repute.

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

Mehani gone from tribal escutcheon
Off on misadventured quest of manly worth
Betrayal! Murder! Audacious mutiny!
A curse upon the upstart Mehani!

A bolt from Mehan bow did strike the sky
To deal its deadly work upon the sun
The godly blood does nature so oppose
That earth did scream unearthly of the solar slaughter.

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

And so was Lugraâ,¬,,¢s peerless love deprived
And all-moment-companion sudden gone.
Thus did Lugra weep a storm of tears
To weary all the world with woe.

And Lugraâ,¬,,¢s Tears did flood the plains of Earth
Involuntary decimation consummation
Teardrops one by one did build
Salient tears of saline drop by drop did fill a sea.

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

And now the Lugradhe-ougre-lendu
Which is the moon weeping waters
Does lie upon the earth
A monument to unforgotten love

And when a tear descends a cheek
And falls to earth we know it said
That doubtless every tear thatâ,¬,,¢s shed
Will join our Lugraâ,¬,,¢s in that Sea.

Alas, alas, poor Lugra fair
Night matron and celestial mistress
Of the much beloved sun
Sits lonesome in the sky.

The Desert is Death

In Spring the sun comes out
And makes its fiery arc across the sky
In Summer the sun comes out
And makes its fiery arc across the sky
In Autumn the sun comes out
And makes its fiery arc across the sky
In Winter the sun comes out
And makes its fiery arc across the sky

In summer human-birds fly away
In winter human-birds return
Spring and Autumn are but Summer's clones
To give a year full complement of days
The sky a dull brown dunny screen of haze
Does block blue sky replacing blue with bland
Makes mere monotony of sky and sand
With monotone un-seasons set with sun ablaze

This sandy sepulcher of elderly content
Provides but two-par element existence
The year long summer winter of our discontent
Has not a quality to serve its recompense.
Nature does not abideth here, nor life:
Foreign palms and stillborn blasted saplings
Populate the barren-land with strife
And stand no tree worth living bird to sing.

Life here is but a solemn elegy
Engraved on the unanimous headstone
Of the elderly ocean, collectively alone
Makes desert home t'enjoy their coffins' carpentry.
Here the living live already dead
False faces front false personality
Naught here can constitute reality--
The only hope: escape and move ahead.

Metaphor for a Kiss

A lazy leaf meanders in its carefree path
Along the gentle arch of the flowing branch.
Drunken on the effervescent aqua vitae,
Glittering gold in the solar radiance
In one eternal moment passed too soon
Where somnambulant the vegetal trek begins:
A sleepy sojourn dreamt in an unconscious core
That has no thoughts or feelings, till today.
In sudden, unforeseen awakening, the leaf
With newfound eyes beholds its present conundrum
Far be it from oaken branch in safe harbor;
But rather caught in watery branch at sea.
The leaf is a cartographer in a New World,
Striking paths that never have been tread
Through virgin lands that never have been seen.
It is drawn inexorably on in the torrent
Seeing sights that are a heaven to menâ,¬,,¢s eyes
Yet blind to all but to the path itself
On which it moves unceasing in its purposed course.
The journeyâ,¬,,¢s worth exceeds its destinationâ,¬'
Such is the leafy mantra, its weltanschauung
That drives it ever onward in the ebullient flow.
But the tempo picks up, più allegretto
Con moto it moves meno adagio
And molto presto, with great pitch and tempest
In tossing waters, dipping swirling bubbling,
Babbling and garbling and gibbering, rush and roarâ,¬'
The din and maelstrom, tumult of excitation
Draws the leaf to deep recesses of the rapid
Where ecstatic waves crash passionately down,
Pinning down the leaf where it would not seek escape.
The leaf is thrown about in lively fitful throes
Where water pounds out drums in its ears and drowns it
In the wet fires of glorious exultation,
And upon the very precipice of feeling
A familiar refrain sounds out vindicated:
The journeyâ,¬,,¢s worth exceeds its destinationâ,¬'
Propelled with fatal speed over the cataract
The little leaf falls weightless through the sky.

On the Beach

A dormant duo together entwines
And feels a spray of sea-salt on their face,
Here ivy clings where grow no ivy vines
That lies as one in motionless embrace.
Held fast in fervent wordless confidence
A secret known by both yet never said
Will pass between them in their reverence
Sealed by a kiss upon a sandy bed.

A steady crash and flow of waves keeps time
And sets the tempo of the lovers' lay.
To move would have no reason and no rhyme
To two who lie in brightness of the day
Asleep as in the blackest of the nights
Who, would they wake, would be as in a dream
And be as love-curst as by pixie-sprites,
Eyes of Aaron's ligure and sapphire gleam.

With tender clutches they each other greet
To seek a comfort in each other's arms,
And subtle breathing; soft and low and sweet
Affection's testament care love disarms
The two sleep soundly in so fair a vice
As that that love can bind a couple in
And so imprisoned likewise hearts can win
By their contentment and their own devise.

Seraph

The Life of an Idea
Boundless, the child of the mind meet light
Bawling and screaming in its livelihood
Through no great pain but that it cannot speak.
A virgin to the novelties of sight
Preceding wisdom, doing worldly good
It's frail form the meekest of the meek.
Takes in the sweetest succor milky white,
Gains strength from a nurturing motherhood,
And soon the fluid momentum of a creek.
The child grows and lives among its kin,
Beside its siblings of its mother's womb
Where it runs rampant, raucous in its youth.
Their father is experience, whose thin-
Mouth frowns or smiles as his children bloom
The judge of each one's quality and truth.
Adolescent rebellions begin
Without its father's blessing does it fume'"
Goes out into the world, still grinding tooth.
In time the child grows strong, it's father frail
But embittered, one against the other
They take up arms in challenge filial.
Across the fields of Reason they assail
And fight and bite through all winds and weather
To test advantage: new or ancestral?
The battle rages till one can prevail
The other obscurity shall smother.
To win would be to '˜come material.
A fleeting victory, though I may say:
The mind may fight a million in a day.

I should take a brief second and verbally appreciate the pieces you've put up here.  The reworked ballad and the metaphor are my favorites.  I use quite a bit of written work in my setting, and one or two styles are used only for certain time periods.  Thanks for sharing.
