I just had an idea for a guitar-based song, that's based on folksy songs like Dueling Banjos and Devil Went Down to Georgia. This one is tentatively called  Good VS. Evil.

There's two guitars in this, one acoustic, and one distorted electric. It opens up with the acoustic playing a short lick based around the arpeggios of E Major. Say, like this:

To which the electric guitar responds in kind, playing the same lick, but in E minor:

The acoustic then plays a slightly more complicated lick, to which the electric responds again. This continues for a bit, until the electric starts responding with faster, more complicated licks, which the acoustic then repeats. At this point, the acoustic is now responding to the electric, and not the other way around. Then, the acoustic decides it's not going to continue "playing second fiddle" (pun intended), and they each start responding to each other with faster, longer, more complicated licks, building tons of tension. Climatically, the electric eventually reaches an exceptionally intense lick, seemingly frustrated with the rate that the acoustic has been keeping up, but starts to get sloppy. The electric misses a few notes. Tries again on those notes, still missing. Misses a third time. Pauses. Starts to try a fourth time, but is interrupted by...

So a guitar duel.

Basically, but I'm eventually going to try to develop it into specific licks, so it's more of a two-guitar arrangement then an actual duel. Besides, I've already chosen the "winner", so it's not really much of a competition.

Crossroads used a guitar duel even though they scripted out who would be the winner.

Is that the one where Daniel-san outplayed Steve Vai, or some such?

Yeah. Try learning the solo from it, Eugene's Trick Bag. Crazy stuff.

Looking up the tabs right now. It seems fairly straightforward. I'm sure it's deceptive, but I can't tell if it's deceptively simple or deceptively complex.

Anyway, I suspect that that particular duel was somewhere in the back of my head when I thought this up. Okay, so maybe it's not the most original idea, but once I get this all worked out, hopefully it'll still be pretty cool.

Its composed almost entirely of 16th notes @ 160 bpm. Not to mention the arpeggios. Also, you may want to get away from those riffs if you want to do something new, as they seem very similar to a number of riffs from various songs.
