I think I'm eventually going to post my campaign world on the Homebrew forum, but in the meantime, I thought I'd share two maps of two very different cities that have been absorbed into the Empire that forms the center of my campaign.  The first is Aklar, and is the capital city of a large, arid (but not desert) high-elevation Duchy -- think about the more fertile regions of central Asia.  It was formerly the capitol of a large empire belonging to someone else entirely.

The second is another Ducal seat, situated in a larger Duchy that's something like Louisiana in climate, but with vast supplies of high quality granite.  It too, belonged to someone else.  It's also slightly above the 2MB limit, so I had to zip it.

Anyway, I just felt like sharing, so here they are.  Please consider this thread a place to share your city maps, should you wish.  I hope these can help inspire some ideas.

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

I have to ask questions regarding the society here. I like the map, but it raises questions. What kind of traditions and customs, if any, are associated with the construction and spread of cities in your setting? The map gives the impression that, for whatever reason, there is a lot of space left open for appearance or laws or whatnot. Am I right in guessing there's something of this kind?

The cultures in my world have realized that space between buildings reduces the threat of fire.

There are cultures that build the standard sort of wall-to-wall city buildings in my world, but the three involved here (the Ashani who controlled Aklar, the Empyric Bloodkin who controlled Morosone, and the Sethreki who now control both) are not among them.

Yep.  That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :)

(Actually, the maps are really more "abstractions" than scale-to-the-foot street maps. Only main avenues are shown, and the graphics are, with respect to the anonymous buildings, meant to be symbols more than photographs.  But I like my excuse so much I might stick with it.)

Heh, I had just assumed you were only drawing the buildings that were important in some way, and all the "empty" space was in fact filled with housing and other "unimportant" buildings.... your explanation (fire codes) is much, much better! :)
