My players are, even though not all of them own the right books and they do not know some of the rules, are serious but take things finely, and enjoy being challenged.

Like a bug on a windshield can be made pretty serious by just making it rotate after someone hits it, so that it now covers the pit. And if you add a trapdoor slide type thingy at the bottom...
