Inspiration!! Dragon esce type CS

Hey all first off id like to say thanks to all who posted on my last topic. This one though is one i just  thought up and id like to see what people thought about it! It is a bit long though so prepare yourself.
 Alright this world is a world made by a good god(s) and their pantheon type thingy, but when it was formed this one god who turned out to be evil took over the planet and created the dragons all in one swoop. After that the main head good god got pissed and came down and killed the evil god with a crazy +35 Holy Flametounge of Smite Evil and Dragonslaying (the god was a crazy red dragon type dude). So after the main god killed the evil god the world was left to the dragons, for a while. After a few millenia, the dragons finally ended up tainting the world like mad (making almost everything uninhabitable and crazy and descrateing like everything). Then the main god got pissed again and came down and made Humans to fight the dragons on the gods behafe(sp?). The humans did good cuz the gods gave them good friends like Dwarves with their great knowledge of the earth and ability to forge weapons, and Gnomes to make better weapons and technology, and Elves with their good magical abilities and ranger abilities, and Halflings cunning spies and assasins. So all the races kinda got made to help one another fight against the dragons. Then the human alliance type thing fought for another countless millenia against the dragons finally forcing them up into the northern most part of the continent where the humans dared not to tread because of the evil citadel of the evil dragon god was up their and it was  like permently desecrated. But after the wars the humans and everybody laid down their weapons and decided to rebuild the world the dragons had destroyed. And they did for countless millenia. Eventually though they got extremely cocky and arrogant and eventually waged wars on themselves. The dragons came back with a whole new force of craziness (they bred with animals and betrayer humans and such and created orcs, yuanti, lizardfolk, troglydytes and the such). The dragons swept through the humanoid places like wildfire and they were almost wiped out, but there was one place where the dragons couldn't attack which was a southern island (or continent) that was so advanced and powerful the dragons couldn't conquer it. After this all humanity (and dwarves and such) were enslaved by the dragons (and such) for a long long time (except the southern continent island like place). After a millenia or two the humans (and such) rebelled against the dragons (and such) and ended up creating a free nation in the middle of the main continent. But this free nation was devoid of technology and was barbaric and bestial (any ideas how i could make this fit so the dragons didn't conquer it?).  

Alright so thats the world and i have a few questions for you all:
(1) How good do you think it is?
(2) How do you think i could fit the barbaric nation in without the dragons coming in and completely slaughtering them?
(3) What do you think i could call this?
(4) Any ideas on any cool clases you think i could put in here?
(5) Any ideas on any cool races you think i could put in here?

2. How did they rebel in the first place? Surely humanoids have no chance against dragongkind. ;)
3. The nation? I'd name it after a hero that led the rebellion. Humans are always naming places after people. (Silly humans)
4. Make dragonslayer a core class. Just change the ranger around if you aren't good at class building.
5. Dragonkin. Not those lame ones from FR though.

Now, onto the setting.

1) It has potential, I'll give it that. However, it needs to be developed more fully before I can rate how good it is. Right now, what I'm wondering are A) What are the primary themes of the setting, B) how are those themes developed through the setting, and C) what makes this setting unique.

2) Give the barbarians some advantage. Perhaps they discovered a dragonsbane herb, which is deadly poisonous to dragons. Perhaps they found a woodland that dragons could not enter without dying. Be creative!

3) If you are looking for a name for the nation, I agree with Rae. If you are looking for a name for the setting...I'd have to see more. Perhaps "Dragonwars" or "Dragonsfall", but those are incredibly cliché and just downright bad.

4) I disagree with the dragonslayer class - ranger as is works just fine for that. However, definitely add in the dragon shaman core class for the races that serve under the dragons, and make sorcerers a big part of the setting, with all their ties to draconic blood.

5) Pick of Races of the Dragon, spellscales and dragonborn fit in here very well. Kobolds could really shine here as servants of the dragons, and the half dragon template works for limitless purposes. I have the dracemar, a draconic race I'll be porting over from WotC, feel free to take a look at that for inspiration.

(1) Let me restate Raelifin's comment in a more positive way: while not entirely new, your idea for a world forged by a conflict with dragons draws upon popular fantasy imagery, and that can make for a good start.  But realize that your description is just a bare bones idea at the moment.  We'll need to see much more detail before we can judge the world as a whole; a timeline detailing the rise and fall of dragonkind is something that can be included as an element in many different campaign worlds, and we don't yet know what direction yours is going to take.

(2) Remember that a barbaric nation can lack technology but still have powerful spellcasters.  In the real world, people were most likely to believe in magic before the advent of science, so there's nothing wrong with declaring that primative savages just happen to have some of the world's mightiest shamans (who might be clerics, druids, sorcerers, or whatever else you want to call "shamans").  They are closer to nature, after all, and nature is a source of power in a world with divine magic.

(3) It's too early to think of a name.  What you have right now is a narrow history of a world and a rough geography, but no other detail to give things shape.  Work on developing more information about the world - the nature of magic, the types of cultures found there, subplots not directly related to dragons - before worrying about a name.

(4) and (5) I agree with the previous posters' responses to these points.

As an additional comment, if you further develop this setting, consider presenting your information in a slightly less casual way...  cuz like mad informal words and stuff (or dialogue like that last phrase I typed), while fine for just chatting about a random idea, will probably start to irritate some readers if you expand your idea into a longer, more detailed post.

To summarize: your idea is a nice building block to start a campaign world upon, but it needs to be expanded upon before it is really detailed enough to set it apart as its own world.  And be careful about using the following words and phrases: "cuz", "like", "mad", "and stuff".

EDIT: Add "dude" to that list of words and phrases.

I understand that it's very vague and shallow right now but it's really just an idea that I would like to work on and wanted to see what other people thought about it. For a theme, I was just thinking about making it like a high betrayel/dark horror place for all the dragons and a freedom/war place for the barbarian lands, and it would be renaissance tech/god interactive area for the atlantis type place.  And for name I am sorry I should have clarified, I wanted to know what you thought a good name for the setting would be. Also I was wondering what you think I should expand on, I know I should expand on a lot of thing (and I will) but what do you think would be good?

It never hurts to decide what PC classes and races are available.  And once you have those, a few thoughts about what role each class and race plays are always good.  That way, people playing in your world know what place their characters will have in the world.

And remember, there's always the Campaign Elements and Design forum if you just want to work on one little piece of your world at a time.  There are plenty of threads over there about narrow topics like how to change a particular class or how to make a particular race fit with a particular theme.

Ditch the idea. No one leaves an unconquered dangerous threat in the middle of the power center.  More than a bit illogical.  Now if it were on the boundaries, protected by a powerful group of good dragons (and such :evillaugh: ), it would be more logical.  Maybe said good dragons have kept the tech level low in a vain hope that the evil dragons would ignore this "last bastion" as not worth wasting time on, especially as the southern region offers a greater challenge/threat/prize.

Now for the good news: there's nowhere to go but up. I tell you this in the most honest, optimistic sense possible, and without malice: you have here the barest sketch of an idea, and adding detail to it can only improve it. I've been writing my setting for nearly five years, and it still doesn't contain all the detail I want. Patience and dedication and attention to detail are the things that let writers make masterpieces.

Second: currently, you are working with a cliche. All the ideas here have been used before, many times, by many people. This does not mean they're bad ideas (if they were, they probably wouldn't be so popular), but it does make it important that you handle their presentation in a unique way.

Taking old ideas, putting a unique spin on them, and making them new again-- that's my favorite way of writing. But don't feel so tied to the standard ideas that you're constrained by them. I get the feeling, reading this, that you have some kind of idea of what DnD needs to feel like, and a lot of your backstory is designed to help you arrive at that place. I am here to tell you that it's also fine to just let things develop without a particular goal or destination in mind, because the results of that kind of thinking are frequently among the most unique and memorable things I've seen around here.
