–º CRYSTALSTAR COMMONER CAMPAIGN —,,

[ooc]The crunchy stuff related to character generation is here, on the wiki. Other than that, you have 25 points, and characters can be assumed to have been living here for a while-- or not, it's up to you. I'm relatively new to putting crunch to this setting, so if some of the SRD stuff you want doesn't have the right "local flavor" feel free to ask and I can adapt it.[/ooc]

~ Nyengra ~

The town of Nyengra is but one community of many that make up the sprawling metropolis of Varrdyen, literally carved out of the even more sprawling Central Basin jungle. Not just a collection of people, The City (Varrdyen is not even often referred to by name, as it rarely needs to be. Where else could one live?) seems to be a thriving, living organism; each neighborhood forming its own part of the great whole. This urban philosophy seems to pervade the Varrdyeni way of thinking-- living in the jungles is for the primitive tribes.

Though the rest of The City is easily accessible through the many footpaths and roads winding throughout, as well as the Telelink station atop a small pyramid on the west side of the town, Nyengra could also be seen as a microcosm of the entire Varrdyeni urban experience. At the center is the central fountain, providing clean, fresh water. (something those primitive tribes would never have!) As water is life, shops of all types ring the fountain, providing all of the needs of daily life, from humble vegetable shops to purveyors of fine, exotic jewels. Also near the source of water, of course, would be another great social center of Nyengra, the bath house. Though there were great gaps in social standing, going to the bath house was one of the great equalizers of society. Bathing is mixed-- men would not visit without being under the watchful eye of their wives. At the east end of town stands a stately but ancient pyramid, many times painted and refurbished . It is a shrine to the Goddess Nefsa, a prominent member of the Varrdyeni pantheon and of particular importance to the residents of Nyengra. This, too, is a social center, as well as a source of alms for those who have little.

Though festivals and other events are held all over Varrdyen, Nyengra is known particularly for its vivacious (some would say raucous) merrymaking. People will drink wine or chew qat until they are quite intoxicated, and then engage in loud, boisterous displays of dancing and comedy. Staged fighting and mock "slave" auctions are also commonplace. The same drums, gongs, flutes, and special crystalline musical instruments that produce the haunting, etherial melodies of traditional Varrdyeni music are employed in these street festivals to create loud, catchy tunes inspiring all around to join in the festivities.

[ooc]Despite the vastly different appearance of the setting, envisioning urban life in Rome proper might not be a bad analogy for Varrdyen. It was a thriving, bustling place, with a great many citizens who were quite fond of the socializing and conveniences their city has to offer.[/ooc]

Characters still needed:
Ninja D!
Seraphine_Harmonium
Polycarp!
Wensleydale

That is, all of you. :P

Steerpike

Ah! I didn't realize I was considered part of the group!

Sorry, this looks really interesting and I love the city, but I really don't have time to play right now, I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression.  I have grad applications and Christmas with my family right at the moment and just can't devote the time to a game.

Really sorry.

Polycarp

What is our monetary allowance as commoners?

I am assuming we are either Laborers or Artists/Merchants because they use the commoner class, or a variant of it.  Is that true?

As for the slow pace of getting things started, it is the winter holiday season, and a hectic time for people (including myself).  OOC organization might take a while until that's over.

True. I didn't mean to sound impatient.

Nomadic

Just popping in to wish you all luck with this. I can now say that once it gets going it is actually quite a bit of fun. So stick with it and you will have a blast ;)
