A Shadowrun-esque Timeline

This is a fascinating read! Very nice. The following might be a bit cheesy and out of sync with the dark tone of what you already have, but I still wanted to point it out.

You already mentioned that Tolkien and fantasy existed in your version of real world history. I imagine DnD existed as well. Especially since you are actually using their DnD-names it seems that people would have noticed by now that all of the changes that have happened lead to the introduction in the world of everything that is DnD, and nothing else. What would this mean? Is the Monster Manual regarded as holy writ? Are descendants of DnD-writers sought after as the descendants of great prophets? Do people deduce their own game statistics from the Player's Handbook? Did 4th Edition ever appear?

Just a thought; I doubt scientists would be naming elves after faeries either, unless they were thinking "Man, these guys look like the freaks from LotR."  I'm thinking a lot of people are going to come up with names that sound more like the elves being crippled.  Possibly associations with demons, retardation, diseases, etc.

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

Especially if they were naming them while still looking at the first batch of elven infants to be born, when there's not any way to project what an adult elf is going to look like. Compared to a human standard, elf babies probably look somewhat emaciated at the very least, although the facial features might be somewhat more of a giveaway (how pointy are the ears at birth?)

I dunno...
Every scientist I know, and especially biochemists, is a Full Throttle Freak.
The only chance of them not calling them elves or faeries comes from them calling them Vulcans.
Whimsical is almost a requirement in the biochem field.

I think I might make it so the game verion of DnD people play is substantially different from the real DnD, so the overlapping isn't noticed. My other thought on this is that people notice that magic takes the form of what people expect from magic, and DnD really set alot of ideas down for how magic works...but that does get really, really cheesey.

As for elf name, I'm going with Cymro - most of the people I know who would be the type of people to name things tend to be dorks to some extent. Also, something else to keep in mind is that alot of things, before they get offical name, recieve unoffical names that sick. These unoffical names are often given by bloggers, who coin a term and find it sticking, to the point where in a few weeks it becomes as houshold as the word robot. This is only because so many new, unnamed things are appearing - I honestly believe that bloggers will be unintentionally deciding the names of things we discover in the future if they are big enough discoveries.
