Everyone is so down on communism. I think eh's a pretty cool guy. To each according to his needs, from each according to his ability, and doesn't take crap from anyone.

...or something. My internetting is a bit rusty.

The problem with communism is every time people have tried to implement it they have done so through a process of a sudden revolution, mostly in a country that, at the time, is not up to modern standards in terms of industry and infrastructure. A gradual change from capitalism to communism in an advanced and wealthy nation could yield interesting results, IMHO.

The problem with Communism is that Marx and Engles left the door open to mod rule and authoritarianism. Only a perfect world can yield true communism. Since we do not live in such a world we end up with the likes of Mao and Staln.

^^That^^ (not that that's the only problem, but it's sufficient to get a "No" vote from me)

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

I see that as being a bit of a function of the "quick let's have a revolution" idea... usually for that kind of thing you need a strong leader, and that leader is very unlikely to then go "okay, so, that's the revolution done with, you guys can get on with ruling yourselves now, you don't need me anymore"... but then again these are just my thoughts and not really based on any proper socio-political research... after all I'm studying sound art not politics :P

Communism could work in this world...in an isolated location, probably an island or something like it. Everyone would have to be there voluntarily, choosing to participate in it. Also, whenever anyone had children, those children would have to be sent off of the island to be raised elsewhere and only return when they were older if they also chose to live their life that way.

I don't see that happening.

Also, NONSENSE!

Meh, Communism assumes that those with greater ability will be perfectly happy getting proportionately less for their work than those with less ability.

I've never seen that to be the case anywhere. Communism assumes a perfected human state, in which case, we wouldn't need a government at all.

Hey, mod rule and authoritarianism is pretty much how this site runs. I see no problem with it. ^_^
