This may seem a little random, which it is, but I was wondering what everyone thought about it.

My personal vote goes to Obi-Wan, allow me to explain myself.

- Obi defeated Darth Maul after Darth Maul beat Qui-Gon Jinn.
- Obi defeated Anakin Skywalker flat out, and could've defeated Darth Vader.
- Mace Windu could've defeated the Emperor, and the Emperor beat Yoda.
- Obi-Wan lost to Dooku, but later Anakin beat him.
- Luke fought against Vader, but refused to finish the battle (if I am not mistaken).  But it seemed an even match.

I think, therefore, that Obi could beat the Emporer, Vader, Qui-Gon, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, Yoda, and Luke.
That leaves only Mace Windu as possibly being as powerful as Obi-Wan, and frankly, I think Obi-Wan could take him.

Also, as a personal request, I ask that you not include characters from the many, many, many, many, many Star Wars books or games.  As much as you may dislike some of the movies... not mentioning any names... *cough*123*cough* ... please try to stick to Jedi/Sith in the six movies.

I vote the ones from the only good star wars stuff created in the past 6 years, the KOTOR games. :P Other than that, I say the Emperor (at the height of his power, before he enters the strange decline into old age and weakness in the Force).

Qui-Gon, for being the only Jedi who survived the entire series without doing something so incredibly stupid I wanted to rip their throats out.

It could be that he only lasted 3/4ths of one episode, but he's the only SMART jedi I saw that wasn't also evil.

That only proves Dark Helmet's point:  "Good is stupid."

I'll go with teh little green guy before he could fly through the air with lightsaber-chucks.  When he was still the kung fu-movie-master ripoff, he was awesome.

Anakin Skywalker.

Both dramatically (who are we kidding, Star Wars is a biography in six episodes) and in terms of potential power he's the greatest persona in the series.

When it comes to my personal favourite, it's a close call between him and Sidious. The way Sidious played both sides of the board is just wonderful.

I think it's tough to do this match-up thing quite easily, because I think I once read something on how each Jedi has a specific fighting style that they have learned with specific modes of blocking, attack combos, etc. and certain styles are better/worse against certain others. Not only that but I think there were some things that only certain Jedi could actually do (their force powers). But I'm a little crazy.

That being said, I think Anakin really rocks.

So you're saying it could possibly be a Force-powered version of paper/rock/scissors?

Seriously, though, I think this is probably the most likely case. My personal favorite would either be Qui-Gon, or Obi Wan (as he was in IV).

I can totally see the "biography in six parts" thing, but I think ultimately, it was intended more as a struggle between Obi Wan and Anakin, with Luke being thrown in as Obi Wan's "ace in the sleeve", so to speak.

By the way, am I the only one who noticed the fact that James Earl Jones did the whole "image of the father in the night sky" thing for both Luke and Simba? I was half expecting mufasa to say, "siimmbaa.... I am your faawther..."

So far, it looks like people are leaning towards Yoda and Anakin.

Obi-Wan Kenobi = 1
Qui-Gon Jinn = 1
Luke Skywalker = 0
Mace Windu = 0
Yoda = 2
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader = 2
The Emperor/Darth Sidious = 1
Count Dooku = 0
Darth Maul = 0

Hm, I'm not sure whether you guys are going with your favorites or who you think was the best...

Not that it really matters, just a comment.

As far as Star Wars being a story about Anakin Skywalker, I'm sure I really agree or disagree.  I do like sdragon's analogy of them being about a struggle between Obi-Wan and Anakin.  That's really brought out in the 3rd movie.

Also, just a quick question, was anyone else as surprised as me when the Emperor was able to defeat Yoda?  I mean, especially since Mace Windu then proceeded to beat the Emperor.  Does that mean Mace was a better swordsman (Lightsaberman?) than Yoda?  Hmm....

It is not "a Force-powered version of paper/rock/scissors."  Jedi Martial Arts, described here quite throughly  have been developed quite deeply by the Expanded Universe.

Personally, I like Revan (from KotOR), both as Darth Revan and the later reformed Revan, the best.  If you delve into his back story, he's actually one of the most interesting Jedi, in my opinion.

OK, so maybe paper/scissors/rock was a poor analogy, but the idea of "no one form is fundamentally superior to any other one form" still seems to hold.

I've only played the first KotOR, and between my lust for sidequests, and the fact that it was a borrowed copy, I never did finish it. Though, I did get far enough that I might as well have finished it (Only one planet left, I swear...), so I'm pretty sure I know what in his history that you're refering to. I agree, very nice touch.

That wikipedia article is where I got my reasoning. :)

I don't think it's as simple as a rock/paper/scissors situation, but there are a lot of reasons by this fighting style article that suggests that sheer mastery isn't the only variable that creates the ability of one Jedi to have an advantage over another.

Hmm, having just rewatched Episodes II and III, I have to admit my mistake in claiming that the Emperor defeated Yoda, but I am more positive that Mace Windu was more than a match for the Emperor.  Still, I continue to hold that Obi-Wan Kenobi is the Greatest Jedi/Sith, but now it seems like Yoda is a better runner-up than Mace Windu.

brainface

Han Solo. He beat Darth Vader in a dog fight. That lasted like 3 seconds. While flying some sort of crappy smuggling freighter. He is the greatest jedi because he defeated a Sith Lord and didn't even need the force!

On Kotor, Revan was awesome. But you got your pronoun backwards. Also, Bastilla (sp?) was the worst emo-Sith ever.
