I started trying out Ubuntu Linux, which comes packaged with the incredible graphics editing program, Gimp, and I felt the desire to share my humble creation with it. Keep in mind, the word choice is entirely arbitrary.






So what does everybody think?

It's nice, but I think the shadow behind the ladders might do better directly underneath instead of offset.

The waves are a bit harsh.  I like them, but there's too much negative space that it makes them inconsistent.  I'd make them more like ripples.  The lettering I really like, as well as the stretched white glow.  That's well done.

SG: Actually, it's hard to tell at that size (and in retrospect, I probably should have scaled the original a bit bigger to make it easier to see), but that's actually a glowing effect. You can see it better if you look around the I when it's sized at 150%

Jharviss: The wave/ripples were actually a happy little surprise, but now that I know how to make them, I can edit them to be as ripply or wavy as I like. Unfortunately, though, it starts to break up a bit as I go more towards the ripply side. By the way, by "stretched white glow", do you mean around the lettering, or that big lighting thingy behind the A? I'm kind of curious.

Both.  The placement of the flare and then having the white glow on each letter getting progressively longer as the letter is further from the flare is a cool effect.

(Looking at it again, it might just be an illusion.  Oh well.)

I think it is just an illusion, as the glow tends to blend in with the flare more, the closer the letter is.

That said, apparently the casual viewer won't catch that, making it yet another nice little surprise...

Edit- Though, I'm sure I could easily figure out a way to make the glow more apparent in the letters further away from the flare, without having to resort to such optical illusions...

I like the first of the three the most. The flare lines around the star are cool on that one.

But...you really expect us to believe the word choice is arbitrary? Really?

Personally, I don't like the soft fuzzy white glow around the letters at all. It looks kind of like you just randomly took the airbrush tool and went plop plop plop. It would look a lot cooler (to me anyway) if there was just more general glow from the background light, and the dark text sort of stood out from that.

You know.. all imposing and.. alien-like. :D
