Snakefing had a really good idea for a contest in the chatroom tonight: inventing a sport for a fantasy world. I've been wanting some sort of league sport for Panisadore - I was trying to come up with what would go on in an arena district of Salis Freeport since I couldn't see them really getting into gladiatorial/dueling events. I came up with some alternative dueling forms for the elves in my world, but they take the art form far to seriously. Quidditch is more the style that I'm looking for. In the course of it though we started brainstorming one possibility that I want to through out as a possible group effort creation for a sport (edited for clarity/topicality):

<Snargash> Hmm - alchemists actually inventing Flubber could get interesting

<snakefing> Some form of polo played on giant war buffaloes

<Snargash> I could see multiple riders on a large animal: one with the actual "racket,"  one guiding the animal and one basically keeping opponents from blocking/interfering

<snakefing> hmmm, with a big cattle prod/Rod of Shocking Grasp.

<Snargash> A broad backed animal. Yeah, definitely an arena sport; possibly even fully enclosed: ricochet would be a requirement to reach the goal with a flubber ball wall; to ceiling to goal even - flying goalies on ? with big "sticky mitts" to catch the ball. . .

<snakefing> Maybe a 3-D version where elves run tightropes stretched across at different levels.

<Snargash> that could get weird - not sure about tight ropes and a hyper-velocity superball bouncing around - but it could even make it better. . .

<snakefing> that's an amusing mental image. That ball comes flying across and just sticks to your mitt - but then how do you get it off?

<Snargash> alchemical repellent? I'm really just thinking sticky enough (and soft) to keep it from bouncing off the glove - although the goalie could as well knock it back into play but that could be the backside of the glove

<snakefing> yeah, I'm just thinking with something like flubber, it would take a pretty odd substance to actually corral the ball.

<Snargash> a net that closes around it. Of course a light weight goalie could go flying across the arena dragged by a fast enough shot. . .

<snakefing> I don't know, shouldn't there be a rule about gnomes as goalies?

<Snargash>goalies with something like a butterfly net (but a hell of a lot stronger) the opening of net closes off when the ball hits the back and stretches/pulls on it - well are goalies flying magically or riding something as well?

<snakefing> There should be some dead spots in the field, so that an errant shot wouldn't ricochet around indefinitely.

<Snargash> maybe - a fully enclosed field though would permit teams to catch the ball tho

<Snargash> hmm - tri level - bulls on the ground - tightrope mids and a flying goal zone near the ceiling maybe?
In accordance with Prophecy. . .
