Photoshop question: Enlarging a document

So I've created something that worked in theory, but not in practice.  Now I need to make it wider so I can have a bit more space to put things.  How do I do this?  The only thing I've found was to make the document itself larger, which ended up making the contents of the document larger...not what I'm after.
