Quote from: The Body of LightAnd I was asked,
What if the spirit precedes body?
The awe, the marvel:
Form producing function,
the yearning of an essence for cohesion;
My atoms would coalesce, my dreams
would split and ache, and my whole
would be of one;

But if this is reversed?
If body precedes spirit, what is either?
A glory surpassing glory,
A forethought surpassing thought,
The forms taken of function,
Eyes taken from light, and thus
Illumination taken from darkness,
A wholeness taken from absence,
A spirit dreamed from aching;

This is the private species of my joy,
the candle which enlightens my benighted wonder.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds

Quote from: The Electric HungerIs the thunder lightning's child?
Does the crooked bolt forbear the shatter?
Or, having no prejudice,
Does the nimbus birth shadow and echo as twins?
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds

Quote from: From AssignmentsWhere there is winter, once there was spring
In summer, a hidden autumn;

Where once were strangers, I yield to neighbors
From ignorance, revealed community;

Where now is violence, there could be peace
To vigilance, deception is a foe.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

Quote from: Contextualizing the tabletAn icon was carved against the stone
leading Joshua and his brother James
to marvel at its inscription.

So inspired by this icon, Joshua bears a
vision,

And in this vision, the world is recreated
in pain.

Can antiquity persist against
the violence of relevance?

Or must wisdom be a changeling to
perpetuate?

Must obscurity be abolished for every
generation?

In this, ignorance is an enemy
with circumstance as its template.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

Quote from: Unanimity or utilityThat which is created
is eventually destroyed,
and what persists may only
be salvaged from ruins.

But that which is assembled
may be disassembled,
its components analyzed,
its flaws denounced.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

Quote from: Psalm of a mortal speakerI spoke,
and when I spoke,
a vibration was begotten,
and from that sound I issued form.

Lips, teeth, tongue, throat, and nose,
harmonious in hallelujah.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

Quote from: On honorsWhen I could see, I saw;
Until that time, I knew nothing of sight.

When I saw you, I knew of you,
Until that time, what could I have known?

Without darkness, you meant nothing;
Without ignorance, knowledge lacks its value.

Where knowledge is lacking, teach!  And learn!
Even one who lives in darkness may know much about a shadow.
It is through condescension that one assumes a mantle,
it is through such weight that ignorance disguises itself as truth.

Pray not for the ignorant, for they have much to learn;
Pity the one who thinks himself as knowing all.
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
-Tom Waits, Rain Dogs
