It could work from a business point of view. Flashier combats sell more tickets, so the arena has incentive to encourage that kind of behavior in its combatants.

What the incentives would be, exactly, or how we determine what actions are merit-worthy... I can't think of a good way to delineate that, except to say "Xathan decides." Which works fine, really.

Some ideas on a crowd rating system.

An action in combat has a chance to wow the crowd, DC 15 or 20. A crowd check would be 1d20 + action mod. A few action mods could be set, but most will be up to the pit boss. For example a counter move, a readied action that stops another PC's attack, or disarming an opponent might have a +2 or +3 action mod. There would be things that give a negative mod as well, such as running away the entire match, using the same move over and over again, or anything else that might lose the interest of the crowd. If you pass the check your crowd rating increases. If you fail, by 5 or less your rating stays the same. If you fail by 5 or more your rating decreases. During combat this rating could give a +1 circumstance bonus to attack and saves to whoever has the higher rating, as well as an additional +1 bonus for every 3 points higher your rating is than your opponent. Out of combat this may get you some discounts from vendors, blacksmiths donating weapons (their stuff is used by the best), etc...

Other factors in your Crowd Rating would be wins/loses, whether or not you finished the way the crowd wanted you to, etc... Xathan can randomly, and mostly secretly, roll the crowds mood, (bloodthristy, neutral, sparring, and others I can't think of), and this too can affect the crowd rating.

These are just random thoughts right now and stil needs to be ironed out.

Add in the Charisma mod too. A good performer knows when to perform actions that impress the crowd, and gladiators are a type of performer... Or you could give those with 5 ranks in perform a bonus...

Question about the last match. Didn't !meaba need to make handle animal checks for the dogs (DC 10 and with his +6 it shouldn't be a problem), but it would be a move action for each thus waiting for !meaba's turn so he could order them to attack? As well, wouldn't the pit boss control animals in combat? Not that it really mattered for the last battle but it may come up again.

Though a question that might affect the outcome of the last battle. Why was the strength check for the dog for the trip 1d20+3? A dog's str mod is +1 and his size mod is -4 so it should have been 1d20-3 so Saren  would have succeeded with his 17. I may have missed something, so if I did let me know.

I don't know if this has been asked, but how many rounds do you get for pre combat actions? This may matter for some of the potions people guzzle (duration in rounds)?

I've just been writting when i chug stuff in the order that i do, leading up to the final pre-battle round. so, if they had the same durations, they would expire in the same ordr i drunk them.

That was more of a question to Xathan. In the last battle it didn't matter, because of the short duration.
