Hey all, I found this place through a link at the Cartographer's Guild, where I've been a member for almost four years.  I like what I see here so far!

Life Story
I was born in Michigan many moons ago (1972).  Served in the US navy for several years, traveled/was stationed all over.  Was a hospital corpsman in the navy, became an optician, and that's what I do today - make and sell glasses to the great unwashed masses of San Francisco.  :D  I'm a wannabe writer, with one completed horror novel and two fantasy novels in the works, as well as several short stories in various genres.  Nothing published yet.

Gaming Systems I use/Gaming History
I was introduced to RPGs in the early 80s.  The first game I ever played was the D&D basic set (the old red, blue, green, etc books).  I missed the first wave of AD&D 2nd edition since it came out right around the time I joined the navy, but I got into it later on, along with Shadowrun and GURPS.  Haven't played regularly for probably 8 or 9 years now, but I still buy game supplement books from time to time just because they're cool and I'm a geek.  :D  I love creating game/campaign settings.

Personal Likes and Dislikes
I love low fantasy, pulp, steampunk, alternate history, horror, science-fantasy, S&S, sword & planet, etc.  High fantasy, not so much.  I'm also not a fan of the 600-sentient-races-on-one-planet theory.  Most of my worlds are human-centric, with different cultures standing in for various traditional fantasy races.  I don't like generic ideas.

Strengths and Weaknesses in game design
I would say I'm an idea person first and foremost.  Coming up with ideas has never been a problem; it's staying the course and finishing them that does me in.

Influences on my Design
-Robert E. Howard
-Jack Vance
-Michael Moorcock
-Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan B&W magazine (remember that?)
-Gardner Fox, Lin Carter, Fritz Leiber, and too many others to mention
-recently, Jay Lake, R. Scott Bakker, George Martin

---------------------------
Anyway, love what I've seen from you guys here, and I hope to contribute some of my own stuff (at some point).

Welcome to the forum Diamond!  Those are some top-notch influences you've listed there.

If you have an urge to scratch the old gaming itch we sometimes run real-time and play-by-post roleplaying games (both one-offs and extended games) here when we're not designing campaign settings.

What's your horror novel about?

sparkletwist

Welcome. :)

I also like your influences. I'm a fan of pulp, steampunk, sci-fantasy and sword & planet myself; my own setting is based fairly heavily on these things, as well as incorporating some Indian mythology. It's fun to mash genres together, too, isn't it?

By all means, please contribute! Even if you don't have anything ready to post, you're more than welcome to post comments and thoughts on the work of others-- in many ways, this is even more valuable and essential, as nothing here really grows without feedback. :)

Diamond

Thanks for the welcome!

Steerpike (love me some M. Peake BTW), my book's about drug smugglers that shipwreck on a South Pacific island that was the site of a secret WWII Japanese experiment designed to create super-soldiers but instead resulted in mutant vampires.  As these things are wont to do, doncha know.

Steerpike

That sounds pretty amazing.  I hope one day I can buy and read it!

Most of your influences seem to veer more to sword & sorcery writers.  Any particular horror influences?  I'm always on the lookout for decent horror writers (the phrase "decent horror writer" too often verging on oxymoron).

Diamond

Hmm.  Horror writers... that's a tough one, because many of my favorites veer off into other genres.  I think a lot of what Clark Ashton Smith wrote, for example is horror-fantasy.  As far as 'traditional' horror, I'd have to say Clive Barker and David Cronenberg are two of the biggest; the whole genre of body horror lends itself very well to a lot of what I strive to write.  I also really enjoy Tim Curran, Ed Lee, Richard Laymon, Scott Nicholson, and Joe McKinney.

Oh BTW, your Cadaverous Earth setting is magnificent.

Xathan

Welcome Diamond! Enjoy the CBG; come for the settings, stay for the turtles.

Love the list of inspirations. Can't wait to see what you've come up with!

Hello everyone, i guess this is the place for introductions, im new and my first lenguage is not english so bear with me.

born on november 1989, i live in a Mexican city very near to the US border, like 20 minutes away if there is no traffic, i haven't met anyone on my town that plays any kind of rpg game that isnt in xbox or such thing and as such i have never played a dnd or any other kind of rpg but i have always read about them online and i've always been really curious about them, i have tried some other online sites because i want to learn and play but i have run into a lot of elitism or hardcore gamers i guess and i end up being told to buy x book about rules or other, anyhow i guess ill getto the point now.
Like i said i'd love to learn and enjoy playing rp adventures in any kind of setting, be it medieval, space, present, etc, but i know that teaching someone is probably time consuming, hard and possibly boring/rage inducing so i dont expect much.
Im available pretty much every day this month, maybe half of january too while my working condition settles, my time zone is America/Matamoros and i would like to learn/play around 12:00-6:00 pm im not exactly sure how to actually play a game but i downloaded the mibbit thing so IRC is ok, also if anyone points me to free guides, rulesets, or any kind of begginer must know things i would be grateful and umm.. i guess thats about it i have many questions and expectations but i guess this isnt the right thread for that.

TLDR. Newguy, want to learn, free every day from noon to 6 pm, tight budget, i just want to know how to get started.

p.s. its 4 am, havent slept and english is not my first lenguage, please forgive my grammar

pps. i like learning so if you like correcting people's grammar i wont get mad, in fact i would apreciate it.

SA

Grammar is for schmucks.

Welcome to the site! If you want to roleplay online, just stick around and we'll wrangle you into a game.

Fortunately, some popular rpg systems are available (more or less) for free.

  • Pathfinder is probably the one you'll want to best acquaint yourself with.

  • Pathfinder is the successor to Dungeons & Dragons, 3rd Edition, which is probably the game you've heard the most about.

  • FATE also gets some use around here. It's significantly simpler than the above games.

Great thing is, you don't have to buy any of them. All the rules you're likely to need are in the links provided, and they're more useful for the Games Master than the players anyway.

There are also a few home-made rulesets on this site. If you end up in a game on the CBG, you'll find out more about them.

And don't panic about memorising it all! Rules are also for schmucks.

PS: Hop on the IRC (link is accessible at the top of site) and chat with us in realtime. We are much friendlier than the jerk-butts you met on those other sites.

Welcome to the CBG. Like SA said, hop on the IRC chat for some gaming talk and general discussion. Sometimes you might find that everyone there is idle, but there's usually someone around in the evenings.
