Omg, I hate deitific conversations. Maybe it's because I hate deities (I would never be a cleric if I had a choice) or because I think they aren't very important. Anyway, I love the idea of a totem god being the only thing protecting the people in the wilderness but I think it SHOULD be a "Shadow of the Colossus" type thing. It doesn't really have to do anything, it could just have a million hit points and a frightening presence. What more do you need? As for the big sophisticated deity plan... I have no ideas.
Eats brains here! Ugh!
That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.
"To obtain a deep, restful, and fulfilling sleep, you must first submerge yourself in your cyclopean city of hideous non-Euclidean geometries beneath the sea, and then let your body die. But don't worry! As long as you continue to emanate enough evil thought-energy to influence and control your many worshippers throughout the untold eons, they will resurrect you when the time comes. I guarantee it!"
Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive."

(as Stegosaurus) "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'."

(as T-Rex) "I think we should call it...your grave!"

(Stegosaurus) "Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

(T-Rex) "Ha ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh...now die!"
No! penury, inertness and grimace,
In some strange sort, were the land's portion. "See
Or shut your eyes," said Nature peevishly,
"It nothing skills: I cannot help my case:
'Tis the Last Judgment's fire must cure this place,
Calcine its clods and set my prisoners free."

QuoteOK, I was leaning more towards a standard humanoid deity pantheon for the bad-ass empire, but whichever the vote swings...
i think the only 'twist' considered for the empire was to play up the intangibility of their pantheon, to contrast with the blatantly real presence of the totems. (Maybe for instance they'd worship 'War' instead of 'Ares, humanoidish god of war'.)

i'm not sure how much everyone's behind that, though.

as for the totem's actual size:   i think it should vary from Huge - Colossal, with the average being 'Gargantuan'.

i think very few would reach colossal size, due to practical living conditions.   such as the Kraken (or whatever roams the ocean) should be colossal, where as something that lives in a cave should be only huge (yet still incredibly larger the average... such as a huge badger).

just an idea. ..   but i dont think they should all be the same size.

Just a note, I love badger's in D&D, Huge badger gods all the way!  Also, I am glad we agree on civilization having a humanoid pantheon.  I'm not so sure I agree with worshipping concepts, as then they are lacking of depth.  however, if that is what everyone wants, then so be it.  I could deal with worshipping just concepts...

QuoteAlso, I am glad we agree on civilization having a humanoid pantheon. I'm not so sure I agree with worshipping concepts, as then they are lacking of depth.

i still say they should be somewhat vague or otherwise different. maybe have a crapload of them (with only the major ones actually defined by us--hypothetically there's many more with small shrines in a single village)

Or maybe, if we go with the idea of 'the evil empire is trying to reclaim the glory of the lost, ancient empire'
all of the gods could be ancient rulers and saints of the old empire, supposedly risen now as gods.

Ooh, worship of the rulers, I like it...  But, are we still sure about the lost empire deal?  That could be a good excuse for a vote...

Oooh ... they've deified the old rulers of the empire!!! That's a fantastic idea!

And the "resurrected" empire could then be painted as perfectly good from within the society. Certain aspects of it could be decent too, only some of the rulers and some of their methods would be bad. Then we aren't dealing with a monolithic evil empire.

*cough*morally ambiguous conflict*cough*

Thank you people, this is what I define as a morally amiguous conflict.  A problem that creates conflict within the world, and cannot necessarily be solved by the PC's, short of smashing an eniter empire?  Good job people, I'll stop in later to lend some ideas.

Crit, I couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not. I think it's about time to resume work on this, since the theme has been decided upon; hasn't it?

anyone want to submit and idea or two for eithre totem gods, or the BFG pantheon ?

i know Natural 20 was interested in pantheon develipment.

lets open the floor to submissions.

(please don't submit an entire pantheon ;).  i think we should mix and match, but ultimately allow everyone to design a god or two themselves.)

I say we figure out what cultures we have before we write out totem gods.  We're also going to need to defin the various city-states.

I think it would be fun if we started with an existing pantheon; lets say Greek. We take the major Greek gods (basically the Olympians only, though Posidon and Hades count too) and pick animal/creature representations of them. These would be the main Totem gods.

I'm thinking a boar or a wolverine for Aries/War. I imagine a large orc community living in the foothills surrounding a secluded forest. In the heart of the forest resides Aries, a Huge Boar, and the forest itself is filled with boars and dire boars. These orcs grow their hair out long and shaggy, and esteem orcs who have large tusks.

Heck, since we're probably dealing with a relatively small area, we could easily make a totem for each race, then a few for the wild humans.
