Year 1, month 5 (continued) middle of month.
(Which to the 'VolkGara' (Mountain people), would be the Month of Sharpenning, in the Fourth Year of the Broken Door)

Venndak Genir Veterude and his sister, Bixanna Genir Veterude go down to see Jack and Elben, at Doph's request.  The have 2 small kegs of a nut and Honey ale they are calling "Hopitup" that they want an opinion on.  Elben sasy that it's a bit sweet, but, "he'll take it off their hands, since the demand seems to improving slightly."  [note=Beer]  He's actually almost out of the Gastax XXX...sailors sail on water, they don't drink it.[/note]  He says that any more of the Gastax XXX he's be willing to give a better price on.

Also, Bixanna notes the farmers, and asks Jack if he thinks they might be needing some hoes, shvels , or other instruments of 'soil-torture'. [note=Jack] someone please reply for Jack[/note]  Being young, she comes right out and admits that the Genir Family would love some SwampLeaf and Rabisgrass in their diet.  Doph would probably have died before admitting that they actually wanted anything from the young settlement, but the Genier's have a small forge in the summer home.

Jack replied to the girl that they would do what they could for the dwarves.  He felt almost a sense of pride in the idea that what started as a buisiness endeavor is now turning into a settlement of sorts.  He asked the dwarves if they were familiar with any common threats in the area.  The thought that they would be easy prey once the harvest came in made him a little nervous.  He wasn't sure how much the military at the wharf would be able to fight off at once.  He made a note to talk to Elben about this matter.

Jack agrees heartily. Perhaps the Genir's could produce nails for construction, and the possibility of sea use items, such as anchors, tow rings and other critical metal ship's parts. Jack swears that Grebir spoke of the possibility of raising a small field of Swamp Grass in addition to goods he's requested - lettuce, radishes and other greens in addition to the wheat and barley fields.

Brother Aval has spent the last few months spending in days at labor aiding in the construction of the inn, general store and currently aiding in raising a barn for Grebir. He spends in evenings in quiet prayer and communion on the islet. He has even taught himself to swim to be closer to his goddess.

While doing his work, he has offered bits of wisdom taught him by Celanta - he begins to preach though never to annoyance and then silently works at carpentry.

Brother Aval declares that the Solstices and Equanox are important holy days to Celanta of the Cove. Before the first of next month will be the Summer Solstice and with the trading post turned hamlet with such success, there should be a celebration of life and in honor of "she who cares for the people of Para Bay".

He plans to hold a prayer vigil and baptism ceremony at the end of the holiday's events for any who wish to hear the song of the Lady by the Sea.

Year 1, month 6 (beginning of month)
(Which to the 'VolkGara' (Mountain people), would be the Month of Smelting, in the Fourth Year of the Broken Door)

Bixanna's information to Doph sends him into a fit of angst.  Life in the main Whiskandir mines for the Veterude clan (one of four clans who toil there) is good, especially for the Genir's.  But it's pretty boring, and things are pretty set.[note] Doph's subconsious, at least, sees some possibilities here.[/note]

Doph sets Bixanna and Venndak onto increasing the capacity of the little jewlry forge that their great grandfather put in when he openned the Pastavol summer cave for his family.  It was maniny built for tinkering, not producing anything real.  Venndak and Bixanna do make a trip down to see Jack with sixty penny-nails at the end of the fiorst 12 day week.

He and his Mom, Gretta, start working on the still and trying to refine the recipe for Hopitup, while also trying to mix a few batches of Gastax XXX.  Beer tasting is a tough job...

Note that with a still and a forge going, smoke can be seen by the townsfolk in the afternoon coming over the Pastavol...

Year 1, Month 6 (Second Week)

A ship flying the colors of Dernallion anchors out at sea and sends a longboat to the wharf.  Aboard are three men and a young girl.  One of the men, apparently the leader of the four, named Jakob Kynwolf, claims to be a friend of Captain Ragnald, and was told by Captain Ragnald that he would be offered safe port here for a few months while an "unfortunate misunderstanding" back in Dernallion was "cleared up."  With Jakob is his cousin Wynston, his brother Dasdon, and his daughter, the beautiful Perita.

Jakob makes a deal with Halder Valkalan, who agrees to allow the four to stay in his small shack behind his house in return for helping tend the fields.

During the third night of the Kynwolfs new tenure, cousin Wynston is able to fell a large buck with his bow, which he shares with the Valkalans and several others in town.  It turns out that Wynston is quite the proficient hunter, and has offered to train anyone in town who is interested in learning to hunt, and Dasdon is a bit of a carpenter as well.  Perita spends a few days being anti-social, but by the end of their first week, makes acquaintances with Brother Aval, and the two begin talking as friends.

The girls also ask the name of the Inn (getting a blank stare from the already-flummoxed Elben), and take back the empty pony kegs and XL kegs.   They note the envious stares at their mule.
While the Genir family ladies load up the kegs, Dasdon comes over and helps install the new copper threshold.
He asks for a smaller copper threshold for his outhouse, which gives the ladies slight pause.

Before they go back to the Snarulo hills home, Vexanna mentions that she likes coming down to the Hamlet.  Elben asks her if that is what the place looks like, and she nods.

Year 1, Month 7, 2nd day

A crabbing schooner with a broken main-brace pulls into the cove requiring a place for repairs.

Goskin Vaal and his brother Kreb run a crabbing schooner from Landsport 400 miles down the coast. Just last season they discovered the richest shoals of blue crab lies just beyond the mouth of Para Bay, about 5 leagues out. The reason they travel so far, is that the winter portage fees at Landsport is ridiculously high for fisherman. Only a rich haul will suffice.

They'd hoped their harvest of blue crab could be sufficient enough to make the year profitable. Unfortunately the broken main-brace would cost them the season. In exhasperation, Goskin asks Jack - what would you charge me for winter portage fees?

Kreb spending too much time beneath the flagon, declares, "This tavern needs a name! I say its the Blue Crab Inn." and promptly drops into unconsciousness.

[note Goskin needs an Answer]How much are portage fees for a crabbing schooner? If you give me a fair price, I will give you a crab market that will make you rich...[/note]

[note]
I looked for a pre-established name for the forest and didn't see anything, so I went with Sharonn - I'll change it if needed[/note]
Wynston has had some great success hunting in the Sharonn Forest north of the bay, and has decided that he would like to build a small hunting lodge where he can stay out in the woods and hunt for large game without worry of the villagers scaring away prime game by being too close.  He finds a suitable locale about five miles into the forest in a small clearing, and coerces his nephew Dasdon to help him build as well, when Dasdon's not busy with the shrine.

Jakob has been spending more and more time at the tavern, when he's not helping the Valkalans with their land.  He has made quick friends (or at least, acquaintances) with Goskin and Kreb, and talks often of sailing off with them next time they head out for the crabs.

Year 1, Month 7, end of month

Goskin and Kreb finish repairing the main-brace of the schooner and invite Jakob to join them. With the generously low portage fee agreed upon with Elben and Jack, the plan is to harvest as many crab traps the season will allow, take the 3 week journey to Landsport drop the crabs and return with their families to hopefully build a future in the hamlet at Para Bay.

Goskin promises to pay all portage fees and the building of a home for two families (if that could be arranged), upon the arrival back to the cove in 7 weeks.

They drop off 50 blue crabs as a deposit to Elben to add to the Inn's menu.

Graden Valkalan has been eagerly learning to hunt with Wynston and helping to build the hunting lodge. "Graden has the patience of a tree!" so Wynston proclaims.

Nolan Valkalan delivers 5 bushels of rabisgrass and 3 bushels of Swamp Leaf, the first crops to ripen, in addition to 100 pounds of potatoes to Jack at the General Store. "It will be another month before the greens will be ready to harvest", he informs Jack.

Brother Aval gives a formal baptism for Perita with a swim to Celanta Islet, and an evening of prayer to officially sanctify her as the first lay disciple of Celanta.

Perita asks if the Shrine might need a choir, "we could ask the Ceng's if they were interested."

They have the copper threshhold for Elben, and a metal frame to hang a sign on.  Doph asks Elben if he might need some pewter mugs or some ceramic ones, since they make both.
They have 2 lg casks of 'Gastax XXX', the high alcohol, high gravity porter.  They have 2 lg casks of Hopitup, the nut- and honey ale, as well.  They try 2 steamed crabs.

They go visit Jack, and bring him 3 ceramic Pujumi casks (about 2 liters, tall and thin) full of the Whiskandir Mountain Whiskey (Now you can see why Doph has not been around).  They also bring 2 long tandem saws (iron), 3 single saws (iron), 288 more iron penny nails, 2 plain steel sax daggers, and 20 steel tipped high-quality hunting arrows.  They gladly take a bushel of both Swampleaf and RabisGrass as part of their payment, as well as some cured venison.  They praise the Valkalan family.
They also ask what else they hamlet needs.

They mention that Grandpappy Hull 'The Bull' Genir Veterude is not doing well, and that they have sent for a few Genir cousins to help out.  Venndak mutters something about having to build the first tomb in the summerhome becasue Doph is stubborn.

As they wheel away, Bixanna has an idea and stops by Brother Aval and asks what the symbol of Celanta might be.

Year 1, Month 8, Just a few days later...

Jakob had agreed to sail with Goskin and Kreb and learn all there was to learn about bluecrab fishing in 7 weeks.
[note]
Garlhogs are the size of a large dog, with short stubby legs, stubby necks, and a thick tough skin that is great as cured hide.  Their meat is delicious if cooked properly, and males grow two large, curved horns on their heads which can be used for tools and carving.  Females can be milked for a bittersweet milk.[/note]
Wynston and Graden have been doing well, bringing in meat from the roaming garlhogs in the area.  They have also, with the help of Dasdon, laid a foundation and supports for a small hunting lodge, which will include a small kitchen with various preparation methods for preserving meats, two small bed rooms, all joined by a small common room with a fire pit.  They plan a stables as well, but with only one true carpenter in the area (Dasdon), it is hard to get a lot of proper buildings built.

Wynston has also been considering attempting to catch a few of the garlhogs and trying to raise them for sustainability, but has no place to pen them, and has no animal farming experience.  He heads over to ask the wise Elben if he has any suggestions and advice on the methods of raising (or herding) garlhogs.

Brother Aval, Perita, and Dasdon have been having vigorous discussions as to the nature of Celanta's shrine, in particular how it should be designed.   Brother Aval would love to have a round, open-top structure with circular pews, surrounding a small pool, but Dasdon disagrees on the practicalities of such a structure.  As of yet, they are undecided on the best route to take.

Brother Aval kindly informs Bixanna that Celanta has many symbols, but he remembers a beautiful painting of one of the most common symbols - that of a willow tree spread over a quiet pond.

Neubert

Year 1, Month 8

Elben admits he is no herder, but directs Wynston to the herders for advice. Wynston is loathe to go however, as the family have had two sheep gone missing recently, and they have implied, not too subtly, that the Kynwolf family is to blame.

Two cartwrights joins the city and begins building a store for their services. Several people in the community notice they are fairly handy with wood, and think they might be able to relieve Desdon somewhat.
