Ninja D!

That's not easy.  I'd say the Dark Tower series is it but that requires the series.  For a one-shot book, I would have to say Sphere.  I just finished that one for the third or fourth time.

SDragon

That's a tough one, but after a million years of giving it some Deep Thought, I'm convinced it's 42.

Windows! It's only fair I say it, as it's the OS I use the most, but I don't exactly love it. I also use Linux quite frequently and my computing experience would be poorer if I didn't-- but I don't exactly love Linux either.

I'll answer a few random above questions, too:

- Favorite ancient civ: Rome, probably. Or maybe Egypt. Or China. I don't know... there were too many interesting civilizations back then. :D
- Favorite dessert: French Silk Pie!
- Favorite pokemon: Piplup! They're so cute, without being annoying.
- Languages spoken: Other than English, Japanese and Spanish with any proficiency. I can muddle my way through a few others.

My question: What about a particular piece of fiction tends to captivate you and draw you in? Lots of backstory, well-detailed characters, lots of action, etc.?

Acrimone

Windows.  But I'm not picky.

LordVreeg

The company of loved ones is best in life.  The collection of same should be a higher priorotiy to one and all.

what is your idea of cutting loose?
VerkonenVreeg, The Nice.Celtricia, World of Factions

That the same rules designed to reduce the role of the GM and to empower the player also destroyed the autonomy to create a consistent setting. And more importantly, these rules reduce the Roleplaying component of what is supposed to be a \'Fantasy Roleplaying game\' to something else\"-Vreeg

Taking a knife and cutting through the ropes that binds something is my idea of cutting loose.  (Annoying literalism ftw!)

Also, so that Sparkletwist's question doesn't get ignored, I'd say that I can actually tell within the first few sentences whether I'll like a book.  There's something about the energy and style that attracts me before I can reasonably know whether or not the book will be good.  Besides that, I'd say character is the most important thing.

Who is your favorite escape artist? (living, dead, or fictional; whether "escape artist" was their job, or whether they just had to do a lot of escaping)

Mr. Miracle from DC Comics.

Blackberry, Treo, or iPhone?

I would take an iPhone, though I would never pay for one. Don't get me wrong, I like Apple as much as the next PC user but i just despise AT&T. I never much liked Blackberries and god knows what Treo is (is that a new Pokemon?)

If you could have levels in any D&D class, which would you choose?

Kindling

Druid. Shapeshifting, spell casting, and practical wilderness skills. Who could ask for more?

Because I am hell-bent on world domination silly.  The world is a mess and I just . . . need to rule it.

Definitely cool. I'd love to have some Techno-Cyborg equipment, giving me sight beyond sight, strength beyond strength and etc.

What's your favorite Sci-Fi show?

Seraph

Does Star Trek count?  Then I'd go for TNG, because Picard kick the ass of all other Star Trek captains.

African or European swallow?

What's your favorite work of non-fiction?

Edit-- and in response to Sparkletwist's question, I like good storytelling. You can have an intricate plot, involving characters with nuances backgrounds and personalities, but if you tell the story as if you're a terminal history professor, you're not going to keep me interested for very long. Likewise, the plot and characterization can be as simple as "some friends team up to get revenge on a bully", and still be captivating if told well.
